Afghans find imposters among the asylum seekers THE AGE News, Australia: In the wake of the asylum seeker hunger strike in Nauru, it is essential to understand some of the basic facts. As a result of the Taliban-al-Qaeda regime's oppressive policies until its downfall in late 2001, Afghan citizens who sought refuge in foreign countries were genuine refugees from a brutal regime. However, since then it is not clear how many of those claiming to be fleeing persecution were opportunists trying callously to use a tragic story and attract Australian support to win a right of settlement in Australia. We know of at least some cases where the asylum seeker has never been a national of Afghanistan and yet has based their asylum application on the fear of persecution in that country.
Assertions that members of the Hazara community or other ethnic minorities are still subject to persecution does not hold ground on closer scrutiny. It is neither fair nor realistic to extend the past perception of Afghanistan's situation to conditions there now. More than two-thirds of the 600 Afghans who returned from Australian detention centres and from among the temporary protection visa holders in the past two years or so were Hazaras. So far there has been no authentic report that anyone from among them was in any way abused for their ethnic background. Several members in the present Afghan cabinet, including one vice-president, are from the Hazara community. National security and welfare in the country are still in their infancy. Yet there is no evidence to suggest that any particular social group - or any returnees - could be the target of violence. Let us hope that our compassion does not fall victim to the fairytale stories of the imposters and their supporters at the expense of so many genuine refugees.
